Clinically obese people are 40% more likely to die of Covid 19

30th July 2020

Headline news recently has reported the established link between obesity and the severity of Covid 19 symptoms.  The Prime Minister, Boris Johnson has been candid that he was "way over weight" before he fell ill with Coronavirus in April and his admission to intensive care has convinced him of the need to encourage a "leaner" Britain.  Obesity is not only linked with Covid but also Type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, some types of cancer and stroke.  With 29% of the adult population obese (BMI 30 or over) and a further 36% overweight (BMI 25-29.9) the UK has the 6th highest levels of obesity in the world's 35 most developed countries according to the OECD.  The government has launched its "Better Health" campaign this week. Maybe after the long weeks of lockdown and the fact that COVID will be with us for some time, we can all make some small lifestyle changes to be better prepared for any increase in Covid levels
